Family Matters precon.
The stock Bloomburrow Commander precon led by Zinnia, Valley's Voice, with Arthur, Marigold Knight as the alternate commander. Zinnia gives every creature spell you cast offspring {2}, so paying a little extra copies your creature as a 1/1 token that repeats its enter trigger, feeding payoffs like Agate Instigator, Devilish Valet, and Curiosity Crafter while Zinnia herself grows with each small body.
Family Matters is a Jeskai tokens deck built around Zinnia's offspring gift.
Full archetype
Every creature spell you cast can take an extra {2} to arrive with a 1/1 token copy, doubling enter-the-battlefield triggers and flooding the board with base power 1 bodies that pump Zinnia and feed payoffs like Agate Instigator, Devilish Valet, and Curiosity Crafter.
How it plays.
Core game plan
Spend the early turns on mana: Sol Ring, the three Signets, Mind Stone, Fellwar Stone, and Ornithopter of Paradise get you to a spot where every creature can carry its offspring tax. From there, prioritize creatures whose enter triggers you want twice. Cloudblazer, Inspiring Overseer, and Spirited Companion draw cards, Blade Splicer builds Golems, Skyclave Apparition doubles as removal, and Solemn Simulacrum ramps, so each offspring copy is a second helping of value. Agate Instigator converts every body into damage, Rose Room Treasurer pays you in Treasures, and Rapid Augmenter hastes up the copies while growing unblockable. On offense, Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive and Echoing Assault's menace grant make the 1/1s nearly impossible to block, and Curiosity Crafter plus Bident of Thassa turn those hits into a stream of cards. Devilish Valet, Jazal Goldmane, Combat Celebrant, and Elspeth, Sun's Champion convert the wide board into real damage. Your sweepers are chosen to spare the swarm: Dusk only kills power 3 or greater, Calamity of Cinders hits untapped creatures after you have attacked, and Martial Coup and Time Wipe reset boards you have lost. Storm of Souls rebuilds your graveyard as an army of 1/1 flyers, which is exactly the shape this deck wants.
Key cards
- Zinnia, Valley's Voice. The engine. Offspring {2} on every creature spell means each cast can bring a 1/1 copy that repeats its enter trigger, and Zinnia's own power grows with every base power 1 creature you control, so the deck's copies double as her damage.
- Arthur, Marigold Knight. The alternate commander and a strong card in the 99. Attack with Arthur and any other creature and he digs six cards for a free attacker, which arrives tapped and attacking and bounces to your hand for a recast with offspring later.
- Agate Instigator. The deck's main damage payoff: one damage to each opponent whenever another creature you control enters. With offspring copies, token makers, and Storm of Souls rebuilds, it drains the whole table without combat.
- Devilish Valet. Doubles its power each time another creature you control enters. A single offspring cast doubles it twice, and a token-heavy turn multiplies the 1/3 into lethal trample damage out of nowhere.
- Curiosity Crafter. Turns the swarm into cards: every creature token that connects draws you one, and no maximum hand size means you keep everything. Pairs with Tetsuko to make the draws automatic.
- Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive. Makes your power or toughness 1 or less creatures unblockable, which covers every offspring copy and most of the deck's tokens. The two-drop that turns a wide board into guaranteed damage and draws.
- Echoing Assault. Gives all your creature tokens menace and copies your best nontoken attacker as a 1/1 each combat. The copy is temporary, but its enter trigger is not, and the menace anthem makes the swarm hard to stop.
- Rapid Augmenter. The glue: entering base power 1 creatures gain haste, and every uncast creature (all your offspring copies and tokens) grows it and makes it unblockable. Copies attack the turn they arrive.
Combos and synergies
- No infinite combos in the stock list: Family Matters is a Bracket 2 precon with no two-card infinite loops as built. The power is layered token synergy, not a kill combo.
- Offspring plus enters-the-battlefield payoffs: Every offspring copy is an extra creature entering, so Agate Instigator pings the table, Devilish Valet doubles, Rose Room Treasurer makes Treasures, and the copied creature's own ETB (Cloudblazer, Blade Splicer, Skyclave Apparition) triggers again. One cast, four or five triggers.
- Tetsuko plus token draw engines: Tetsuko Umezawa makes your 1/1s unblockable, so every offspring copy and Rabbit connects. With Curiosity Crafter and Bident of Thassa out, each attacker that hits a player draws a card, refilling your hand every combat.
Mulligan
- Two to three lands plus a rock (Sol Ring, a Signet, Mind Stone) so Zinnia lands on curve with offspring mana to spare.
- A hand with cheap ETB creatures (Spirited Companion, Inspiring Overseer, Loyal Warhound) that you are happy to copy once Zinnia is out.
- A payoff plus enablers: Agate Instigator or Curiosity Crafter alongside a couple of castable creatures is a real plan.
- Lands that cover at least two of your three colors, ideally with a dual or the tri-land.
- One-or-zero land hands, or five-plus land hands with no rock and no cheap creature.
- Hands that are all five-plus mana cards with nothing to do before Zinnia arrives.
- All-payoff hands with no creatures to trigger them.
Lines and sequencing
- Turn one to three: land a rock or two, deploy a cheap ETB creature, and get Zinnia out as early as the mana allows.
- Once Zinnia is out, pay the offspring {2} on almost every creature with an enter trigger; skip it only when tempo matters more than value.
- Sequence payoffs first: Agate Instigator, Devilish Valet, or Curiosity Crafter before the token wave, so every body that follows counts.
- Attack with the 1/1s early and often once Tetsuko or Echoing Assault is down; with Curiosity Crafter or Bident out, each hit is a card.
- Swing before you sweep: Calamity of Cinders after your attack hits only untapped defenders, and Dusk leaves your 1/1 army standing.
- Close with a Devilish Valet turn, Jazal Goldmane's pump, Combat Celebrant's extra combat, or Elspeth's emblem once the board is wide.
Pilot difficulty
Intermediate. The core loop of casting creatures and paying offspring is simple, but real skill shows in when to skip the tax for tempo, sequencing payoffs before token waves, and timing the deck's unusual one-sided sweepers around your own attacks.
