RULE ZERO. read this first.
The rule-zero script, the two Game Changer readout, and the disclosed Umbral Mantle loop for a declared Bracket 4 Animated Army pod. One hundred cards, two Game Changers, and eighteen artifacts and enchantments that are 4/4 creatures during your turn and nothing but artifacts and enchantments during everyone else's.

Bracket 4 readout.
Say before shuffling up
Bracket 4 Gruul animated artifacts with Bello. Two Game Changers: Ancient Tomb and The One Ring. My larger artifacts and enchantments attack during my turn; I will identify what is a creature. Umbral Mantle can make unbounded power, or mana with the charged Eternity Elevator, so combo wins are possible. I also use extra combats. No extra turns or mass land denial. The turn-six-or-later combat window is an author estimate, not measured. I can switch decks if that pattern does not fit.

Table disclosures
Pace note. All turn windows are author estimates, not measured results. Distinguish a first elimination from winning the whole table.
Read this before sitting down at a Bracket 4Commander brackets: 1 Exhibition, 2 Core, 3 Upgraded, 4 Optimized, 5 cEDH. Assess Game Changers, intent, pace and disruptive patterns together. Animated Army pod. The pregame above is the script you read out loud; the compliance table is what to volunteer if asked; the Q&A handles the rest. This deck carries one obligation most decks do not: half the board stops being creatures the moment your turn ends, and nothing printed on those cards says so. Say it when Bello lands, say it again when it decides a block, and answer the question every single time it gets asked.
Game Changers
Two. Both get named at rule-zeroThe pre-game conversation about deck power, combos, tutors and table expectations, held before the first shuffle so nobody is surprised by what the deck does. on request, slot by slot, and Bracket 4 has no cap, so there is no denominator to quote.
How the deck closes
Three ways, and the loop is the one the table needs first. The play guide walks the sequencing; this is what gets said out loud.
1. The Mantle loop, unbounded power. Umbral Mantle costs {3} and reads “Equipped creature has ‘{3}, {Q}: This creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.’” with Equip {0}. It is an Equipment and its mana value is 3, so Bello, Bard of the Brambles never animates the Mantle itself; it rides on something Bello has animated. Put it on Thran Dynamo (“{T}: Add {C}{C}{C}”), Gilded Lotus (“{T}: Add three mana of any one color”) or The Eternity Elevator, whose base ability is also “{T}: Add {C}{C}{C}”, during your turn. The order is forced: a permanent that is already untapped cannot pay {Q} (CR 107.6), so you tap for mana first and then activate, and the mana floats because the pool empties only at the end of the step or phase (CR 106.4). Each of the three taps for exactly three against a generic {3} (CR 107.4b), so every cycle is mana neutral and the body gains +2/+2. Bello sets base power and toughness 4/4 in layer 7b and the Mantle adds on top in 7c (CR 613.4b, CR 613.4c), so N cycles leave a 4+2N with indestructible and haste. Hedron Archive and The Great Henge tap for only two, lose a mana every cycle, and do not loop.
2. The Mantle loop on the Elevator, unbounded mana. The Eternity Elevator is {5}, a Legendary Artifact with the Spacecraft subtype and no Equipment type, so Bello animates it at mana value 5. It reads “{T}: Add {C}{C}{C}”, it has Station (“Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery.”), and at 20 or more charge counters it gains “{T}: Add X mana of any one color, where X is the number of charge counters on The Eternity Elevator.” Pump a body with the first loop, station that body onto the Elevator to load the counters, then move the Mantle across with its free equip. Each cycle now taps for X and spends {3} to untap, a net of X minus 3, and X is at least 20 for the ability to exist at all. Crackle with Power is {X}{X}{X}{R}{R} and deals five times X damage to each of up to X targets, so arbitrarily large mana is a kill on every seat at once. Station and equip are both sorcery speed, so the whole assembly happens in your own main phase with an empty stack.
3. The fair close, and it is the usual one. Most games end without either loop. Bello turns eighteen artifacts and enchantments in this deck into 4/4 Elementals with indestructible and haste during your turn, each drawing a card when it connects, so a board of mana rocks becomes a board of hasty attackers the turn he lands. The multipliers stack on top: Unnatural Growth doubles the power and toughness of each creature you control at the beginning of each combat, Berserkers’ Onslaught gives attacking creatures double strike, and Gratuitous Violence doubles damage dealt by creatures you control, which is a replacement effect and targets nothing (CR 614.1a). One animated permanent under all three is an 8/8 with double strike dealing 16 twice, so 32 damage on one seat off a single mana rock. Full Throttle and Great Train Heist then add combats.
The synergy worth volunteering while it happens. Any qualifying artifact or enchantment cast on your own turn with Bello already out enters already a 4/4 Elemental, because a static ability’s continuous effect applies as the permanent enters and before the game checks what triggered (CR 611.3a, CR 611.3c, CR 603.6b). So Warstorm Surge deals 4 to any target off it, doubled to 8 under Gratuitous Violence because the creature that entered is the source; The Great Henge puts a +1/+1 counter on it and draws; Garruk’s Uprising draws; Outcaster Trailblazer and Garruk’s Packleader trigger. Animating something already on the battlefield does none of that, because it never entered a zone (CR 400.7, CR 603.6a). Call the difference out loud, because the table will hear the triggers and assume they always fire.
What turns all of it off. Bello is a 3/3 with no protection and no indestructible of his own. If he leaves mid-combat, every animated attacker stops being a creature, gets removed from combat (CR 506.4) and deals no combat damage. Blasphemous Act is the trap sitting in this deck’s own sorceries: 13 damage to each creature kills Bello, and the next state-based-action check (CR 704.3) strips the animation from everything and unattaches the Mantle (CR 704.5n), which stays on the battlefield rather than being destroyed. The Mantle does not fall off at end of turn, and the timing is worth getting right at a table: no player receives priority during the untap step (CR 502.4) and the cleanup step is still your turn (CR 500.1), so the first check that sees an illegal attachment is the next upkeep that is not yours (CR 503.1). Across back-to-back turns of yours it never comes off at all.
If they ask
Only during my turn, and only the ones at mana value 4 or greater. Bello reads “During your turn, each non-Equipment artifact and non-Aura enchantment you control with mana value 4 or greater is a 4/4 Elemental creature in addition to its other types and has indestructible, haste, and ‘Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.’” Three consequences, all of which change how you play against me:
- On your turn Bello no longer animates them. Most cannot block or be targeted as creatures, but a crewed Esika’s Chariot can. Printed indestructible, such as The One Ring’s, remains.
- A damage sweeper misses either way, and for two different reasons. Cast on my turn, the animated permanents are creatures but they are indestructible, so Blasphemous Act does not destroy them. Cast on your own turn, Starstorm does not damage them at all, because they are not creatures then. Artifact and enchantment removal is the answer to the board, and Bello is the answer to the animation.
- Bello is the switch, and he is a 3/3 with no protection. Kill him and every animated attacker stops being a creature and is removed from combat (CR 506.4), dealing no damage, even after blockers are declared.
Ask at any point what is a creature right now and you get a straight answer. The list of eighteen is above, and it does not change.

Open glossary
- Game Changer
- A specific card on Wizards' published Game Changer list. Bracket 3 caps at 3. Bracket 4 has no published cap, but running more than a few flags more attention at the table.
- Bracket
- Wizards' Commander conversation framework: 1 Exhibition, 2 Core, 3 Upgraded, 4 Optimized, 5 cEDH. A stock precon is not automatically a particular bracket. Discuss deck intent, speed, consistency, and play patterns as well as card restrictions.
- Voltron
- The strategy of stacking equipment, auras, and counters onto a single creature (usually the commander) to one-shot opponents through commander damage.
- Commander damage
- A player who has been dealt 21 or more combat damage by the same commander over the game loses. Track each commander separately, including partners. Noncombat damage does not count, and gaining life does not erase this total.
- ETB
- Short for 'enters the battlefield'. Any triggered ability that fires when a permanent enters play is an ETB trigger.
- Equip
- An Equipment's activated ability: pay its equip cost to attach it to a target creature you control. Normally activate only during your main phase with an empty stack and priority. A separate attach effect follows its own timing and restrictions.
- Attach
- The keyword action for putting an Equipment or Aura onto a creature. ETB triggers that attach an equipment for free bypass both the equip cost and the sorcery-speed limit.
- Free equip
- Attaching without paying the printed equip cost. Sigarda's Aid supplies a triggered attach effect. Puresteel Paladin with metalcraft grants equip 0, which still uses normal equip timing unless another effect changes it.
- Treasure
- Sacrificial colorless artifact token. Tap, sacrifice it, add one mana of any color. Counts as an artifact for triggers and metalcraft.
- Phase Out
- A phased-out permanent is treated as though it does not exist, with limited exceptions. Phasing is not a zone change, destruction, or exile. It normally phases in during its controller's untap step, but effects such as Out of Time specify a different duration.
- Cascade
- A cast trigger: exile cards until you exile a nonland card with lower mana value than the cascade spell. You may cast it without paying its mana cost only if the resulting spell also has lower mana value. Put the other exiled cards on the bottom in a random order.
- Affinity
- A cost-reduction keyword. 'Affinity for artifacts' means the spell costs 1 less to cast for each artifact you control.
- Modified
- A creature is modified if it has a counter, is equipped, or is enchanted by an Aura controlled by that creature's controller. The Equipment's controller does not matter; the Aura's controller does.
- Vigilance
- Attacking does not cause a creature with vigilance to tap. It still needs to be untapped and otherwise eligible to attack. Brave the Sands grants vigilance; Shadowspear grants trample and lifelink instead.
- Lifelink
- Damage dealt by a source with lifelink also causes its controller to gain that much life at the same time. Shadowspear grants lifelink. Vampiric Link instead uses a triggered life-gain ability that resolves later and is not lifelink.
- Mindslaver
- A 'Mindslaver effect' lets you control an opponent's next turn: their draws, plays, and attacks. Named for the Mindslaver artifact; some commander-specific triggers replicate the effect.
- Metalcraft
- An ability word marking effects that care whether you control three or more artifacts. Read the individual card: metalcraft is not itself an activated ability or a shared rules ability.
- Impulse draw
- Exile cards from the top of your library, then you may play them this turn (sometimes longer). At higher power levels, mass impulse effects double as burst card advantage and mana.
- Mulligan
- Under the London mulligan, shuffle and draw seven each time, then put cards on the bottom after choosing to keep. In multiplayer Commander the first mulligan is free; a keep after the second mulligan puts one card back, the third puts two back, and so on.
- Drain
- A trigger that makes an opponent lose life and gains you that much, Blood Artist style. Life loss is not damage, so it goes through protection and prevention that only stop damage.
- Rule-zero
- The pre-game conversation about deck power, combos, tutors and table expectations, held before the first shuffle so nobody is surprised by what the deck does.
- Summoning sickness
- A creature cannot attack, and cannot activate an ability with the tap or untap symbol in its cost, unless it has been under its controller's control continuously since their most recent turn began (CR 302.6). Haste turns it off, and it never applies to other permanent types.
- Replacement effect
- A continuous effect that watches for an event and replaces it with a different one as it happens, rather than triggering afterwards (CR 614.1). When several would apply to the same event, the affected object's controller or the affected player picks the order (CR 616.1).
- Storm
- A triggered ability that functions on the stack: when you cast the spell, copy it for each other spell cast before it this turn (CR 702.40a). The copies are not cast, so they never add to the storm count themselves.
- Mana Vault
- A one-mana artifact that taps for three colorless mana and does not untap during your untap step. Its upkeep trigger lets you pay {4} to untap it. Its draw-step trigger deals 1 damage to you if it is still tapped; paying or declining the upkeep cost is not itself the damage condition.
